The Atlanta Police Department is warning owners of Honda CRVs and Honda Elements to beware of catalytic converter thieves. Thieves appear to be targeting these models, stealing the expensive emissions equipment for the small amounts of platinum and copper that can be culled from them.
An experienced thief can remove the converter in less than five minutes, and they seem to have no fear of public parking lots, since several incidents reported involve the Ansley Mall parking lot.
Catalytic converter repair/replacement can run from the hundreds of dollars, to over $1,000 a pop.
